सागवान की खेती के लिए उपयुक्त मौसम सागवान के लिए नमी और उष्णकटिबंधीय वातावरण जरूरी होता है। यह ज्यादा तापमान को आसानी से बर्दाश्त कर लेता है। लेकिन सागवान की बेहतर विकास के लिए उच्चतम 39 से 44 डिग्री सेंटीग्रेट और निम्नतम 13 से 17 डिग्री सेंटीग्रेड उपयुक्त है। 1200 से 2500 मिलीमीटर बारिश वाले इलाके में इसकी अच्छी पैदावार होती है। इसकी खेती के लिए बारिश, नमी, मिट्टी के साथ-साथ रोशनी और तापमान भी अहम भूमिका निभाता है। 

सागवान खेती में मिट्टी की भूमिका सागवान की सबसे अच्छी पैदावार जलोढ़ मिट्टी में होती है जिसमे चूना-पत्थर, शीष्ट, शैल, भूसी और कुछ ज्वालामुखीय चट्टानें जैसे कि बैसाल्ट मिली हो। वहीं, इसके विपरीत सूखी बलुवाई, छिछली, अम्लीय (6.0पीएच) और दलदलीय मिट्टी में पैदावार बुरी तरह प्रभावित होती है। सॉयल पीएच यानी मिट्टी में अम्लता की मात्रा ही खेती के क्षेत्र और विकास को निर्धारित करती है। सागवान के वन में सॉयल पीएच का रेंज व्यापक है, जो 5.0-8.0 के 6.5-7.5 बीच होता है। 

सागवान खेती में कैल्सियम की भूमिका कैल्सियम, फोस्फोरस, पोटैशियम, नाइट्रोजन और ऑर्गेनिक तत्वों से भरपूर मिट्टी सागवान के लिए बेहद मुफीद है। कई शोध परिणाम बताते हैं कि सागवान के विकास और लंबाई के लिए कैल्सियम की ज्यादा मात्रा बेहद जरूरी है। यही वजह है कि सागौन को कैलकेरियस प्रजाति का नाम दिया गया है। सागवान की खेती कहां होगी इसको निर्धारित करने में कैल्सियम की मात्रा अहम भूमिका निभाती है। साथ ही जहां सागौन की मात्रा जितनी ज्यादा होगी उससे ये भी साबित होता है कि वहां उतना ही ज्यादा कैल्सियम है। जंगली इलाकों में जहां नर्सरी स्थापित की जाती है वो बेहद ऊर्वरक होती है और उसमे अलग से खाद मिलाने की जरूरत नहीं होती है। 

ग्रीन इंडिया बायो टेक में सागवान पौधारोपन सागवान की नर्सरी के लिए हल्की ढाल युक्त अच्छी सूखी हुई बलुई मिट्टी वाला क्षेत्र जरूरी होता है। नर्सरी की एक क्यारी 1.2 मीटर की होती है। इसमे0.3 मी.से 0.6मी की जगह छोड़ी जाती है। साथ ही क्यारियों की लाइन के लिए 0.6 से 1.6 मी. की जगह छोड़ी जाती है। एक क्यारी में 400-800 तक पौधे पैदा होते हैं। इसके लिए क्यारी की खुदाई होती है। इसे करीब 0.3 मी. तक खोदा जाता है और जड़, खूंटी और कंकड़ को निकाला जाता है। जमीन पर पड़े ढेले को अच्छी तरह तोड़ कर मिला दिया जाता है। इस मिट्टी को एक महीने के लिए खुला छोड़ दिया जाता है और उसके बाद उसे क्यारी में बालू और ऑर्गेनिक खाद के साथ भर दिया जाता है। नमी वाले इलाके में जल जमाव को रोकने के लिए जमीन के स्तर से क्यारी को 30 सेमी तक ऊंचा उठाया जाता है। सूखे इलाके में क्यारी को जमीन के स्तर पर रखा जाता है। खासकर बेहद सूखे इलाके में जहां 750 एमएम बारिश होती है वहां पानी में थोड़ी डूबी हुई क्यारियां अच्छा रिजल्ट देती है। एक मानक क्यारी से जो कि 12 मी. की होती है उसमे करीब 3 से 12 किलो बीज इस्तेमाल होता है। 

सागवान की रोपाई के तरीके फैलाकर या छितराकर और क्रमिक या डिबलिंग तरीके से 5 से 10 फीसदी अलग रखकर बुआई की जाती है। क्रमिक या डिबलिंग तरीके से बुआई ज्यादा फायदेमंद होता है अच्छी और मजबूती से बढ़ने वाली होती है। आमतौर पर क्यारियों को उपरी शेड की जरूरत नहीं होती है। सिवा बहुत सूखे इलाके के जहां सिंचाई की ज्यादा जरूरत नहीं पड़ती है। ऐसे हालात में यहां खर-पतवार भी नहीं पनप पाता है।

सागवान रोपन में जगह का महत्व सागवान का रोपन 2m x 2m, 2.5m x 2.5m या 3m x 3m के बीच होना चाहिये। इसे दूसरी फसलों के साथ भी लगाया जा सकता है, लेकिन उसके लिए 4m x 4m या 5m x 1m का गैप या अंतराल रखना जरूरी है। 

सागवान रोपन में जमीन की तैयारी और खेती एवं सावधानियां सागवान के पौधारोपन के लिए जगह चौरस या फिर हल्की ढलान वाला हो (जिसमे अच्छे से पानी निकलने की व्यवस्था हो)। शैल और शीस्ट से युक्त मिट्टी सागौन के लिए अच्छा होता है। सागौन की अच्छी बढ़त के लिए जलोढ़ मिट्टी वाला क्षेत्र बहुत अच्छा माना जाता है। वहीं, लैटेराइट या उसकी बजरी, चिकनी मिट्टी, काली कपासी मिट्टी, बलुई और बजरी सागवान के पौधे के लिए अच्छा नहीं होता है। पौधारोपन के लिए पूरी जमीन की अच्छी जुताई, एक लेवल में करना जरूरी होता है। पौधारोपन की जगह पर सही दूरी पर एक सीध में गड्ढा खुदाई जरूरी होता है। सागवान रोपन के लिए कुछ जरूरी बातें- पूर्व अंकुरित खूंटी या पॉली पॉट का इस्तेमाल करें 45 cm x 45 cm x 45 cm की नाप के गड्ढे की खुदाई करें। मिट्टी में मसाला, कृषि क्षेत्र की खाद और कीटनाशक को दोबारा डालें। साथ ही बजरी वाले इलाके के खोदे गए गड्ढे में ऑर्गेनिक खाद युक्त अच्छी मिट्टी डालें। पौधारोपन के दौरान गड्ढे में 100 ग्राम खाद मिलाएं और उसके बाद मिट्टी की ऊर्वरता को देखते हुए अलग-अलग मात्रा में खाद मिलाते रहें सागवान की खेती के लिए सबसे अच्छा मौसम मॉनसून का होता है, खासकर पहली बारिश का वक्त पौधे की अच्छी बढ़त के लिए बीच-बीच में मिट्टी की निराई-गुड़ाई का भी काम करते रहना चाहिए, पहले साल में एक बार, दूसरे साल में दो बार और तीसरे साल में एक बार पर्याप्त है। पौधारोपन के बाद मिट्टी की तैयारी को अंतिम रुप दें और जहां जरूरी है वहां सिंचाई की व्यवस्था करें। शुरुआती साल में खर-पतवार को हटाने का काम करना सागौन की अच्छी बढ़त को सुनिश्चित करता है।

खर-पतवार का नियंत्रण सागवान के पौधारोपन के शुरुआती दो-तीन सालों में खर-पतवार नियंत्रण पर ध्यान देना बहुत जरूरी है। नियमित अंतराल पर खतर-पतवार हटाने का अभियान चलाते रहना चाहिए। पहले साल में तीन बार, दूसरे साल में दो बार और तीसरे साल में एक बार ये अभियान अच्छी तरह चलाना आवश्यक है। यहां ध्यान रखनेवाली बात ये है कि सागवान ऐसी प्रजाति का पेड़ है जिसकी वृद्धि और विकास के लिये सूर्य की पर्याप्त रोशनी जरूरी है। 

सागवान खेती में सिंचाई की तकनीक शुरुआती दिनों में पौधे की वृद्धि के लिए सिंचाई बेहद अहम है। खर-पतवार नियंत्रण के साथ-साथ सिंचाई भी चलती रहनी चाहिए जिसका अनुपात 3,2,1है। इसके साथ ही मिट्टी का भी काम चलते रहना चाहिए। अगस्त और सितंबर महीने में दो बार खाद डालना चाहिए। लगातार तीन साल तक प्रत्येक पौधे में 50 ग्राम एनपीके (15:15:15) डाला जाना चाहिए। नियमित तौर पर सिंचाई और पौधे की छंटाई से तने की चौड़ाई बढ़ जाती है। ये सब कुछ पौधे के शीर्ष भाग के विकास पर निर्भर करता है जैसे कि प्रति एकड़ वृक्षों की संख्या में कमी। दूसरे शब्दों में अधिक ऊंचाई वाले पौधे लेकिन कम संख्या या फिर कम ऊंचाई वाले पौधे लेकिन संख्या ज्यादा। सिंचाई सुविधायुक्त सागौन के पेड़ तेजी से बढ़ते हैं लेकिन वहीं, रसदार लकड़ी की मात्रा बढ़ जाती है। ऐसे में पौधे का तना कमजोर हो जाता है और हवा से इसे नुकसान पहुंचता है। ऐसे में पौधे में पानी के फफोले बनने लग जाते हैं। ऐसे पेड़ बाहर से दिखने में मजबूत दिखते हैं लेकिन पानी के जमाव की वजह से पैदा हुए फंगस की वजह से अंदर से खोखला हो जाता है। सागवान की खेती में पौधे आमतौर पर 13 से 40 डिग्री तापमान के बीच अच्छी तरह से बढ़ते हैं। प्रत्येक साल 1250 से 3750 एमएम की बारिश इसकी खेती के लिए पर्याप्त है। वहीं, अच्छी गुणवत्ता वाले पेड़ के लिए साल में चार महीना सूखा मौसम चाहिए और इस दौरान 60 एमएम से कम बारिश ही अच्छी होती है। पेड़ के बीच अंतर, तने की काट-छांट की टाइमिंग से पौधे के विकास पर फर्क पड़ता है। कांट-छांट में अगर देरी की गई या फिर पहले या ज्यादा कांट-छांट की जाती है तो इससे भी इसकी खेती पर नकारात्मक प्रभाव पड़ता है।

सागवान पौधारोपन के बीच अंतर फसल शुरुआती दो साल के दौरान सागौन की खेती के बीच में अंतर फसल उगाई जाती है खासकर वहां जहां कृषि योग्य भूमि है। एक बार जब भूमि को पट्टे पर दे दिया जाता है तो पट्टेदार भूमि की सफाई, खूंटे जलाना और पौधारोपन का काम शुरु कर देता है। सागवान की खेती के बीच में आमतौर पर गेहूं, धान, मक्का, तिल और मिर्च के साथ-साथ सब्जी की खेती की जाती है। कुछ फसल जैसे कि गन्ना, केला, जूट, कपास, कद्दू, खीरा की खेती नहीं की जाती है।
